Below is a letter from our principal, Ms. Sandra Gilyard, sent home with students at the beginning of this school year:

Dear Parents/Guardians,

The Putnam County Student Progression Plan for Middle Schools grades 6th-8th standards for promotion was recently changed and approved by the school board. THis information regarding promotion is as follows: Studetns must attain the district or state level of performance for pupil progression on designated district or state assessments in reading, writing, mathematics and science. Students not meeting this criteria must receive remediation or be retained. Districe assessment will include classroom work, observations, tests, district selected assessment tests, and other relevant information.

In order for a student to be promoted to the next grade level within the middle school, 4 of the following 5 provisions shall be met:

  1. Attendance--Students will be allowed no more than 20 absences per year. This may be superseded only by a physician's letter.
  2. S.R.I. score will be used on a sliding scale: 6th grade 800-1050; 7th grade 850-1100; 8th grade 900-1150.
  3. FCAT Writes score of 3.5.
  4. G.P.A.--All students must have at least a 2.0 G.P.A. and pass 5 of 6 classes. Three (3) of these classes must be Language Arts, Math and Science. If a student is enrolled in an Intensive Reading course, he/she must pass that course.
  5. FCAT score must be at least a Level 2. Any student whose FCAT score is a Level 2 must have a G.P.A. of 2.5 or higher.

All retentions will be reviewed and final decisions made by the principal and a committee comprised of teachers and counselor. If you have any questions or concerns, please call the school.

Respectfully,

Sandra Gilyard
